AAhhh, the golf trip is upon us and the weather has just turned warm enough to settle in for a pleasant weekend of golf, food, and responsible revelry...or not. Again this year opens with a Wednesday optional scoring round prior to the team competition as Rick joins Steve, Mike, and Todd at the group consensus favorite Moorland. Alongside these RAGA Tour members, we find Donkey Cup regulars Aaron and Luke as they go off in 2 groups, beginning the weekend of festivities.
The late afternoon tee-time found warm but windy conditions. Teeing off on 10 as a 4-some and 2-some the lead group of Steve, Todd, Mike, and Luke conducted and inter-group competition while Rick and Aaron kept it casual, trying to get some practice in before the main Donkey Cup rounds that would come the next day. This round also presented an opportunity to tune one’s game for the variety of physical conditions the golfers will face throughout the weekend. Among those conditions greeting the golfers in this early spring outing were light roughs and good fairways, which allowed for good lies. Unfortunately these were offset by the terrible shape of Moorland’s greens. As the afternoon progressed, it was clear some rust was needed to be shaken off. When the dust settled, Aaron took the round by a shot over Todd (who will get the 1st place RVa Cup points) while Mike and Rick take the T-3. Steve ends in 4th but did birdie “Hell’s Half-Acre” 16th and Luke rounds out the group but bounced back after a struggling start. Good luck to all the participants of the 17th annual Donkey Cup!
