A chance to hone the game leading up to the Donkey Cup competition. Each golfer has something to prove: Jon C. trying out his new clubs in competition before his stint as captain in Myrtle. Rick trying to keep the good play rolling and prove it is here to stay. Steve is trying to find his chipping game as one of the top players heading into the team competition at Mrytle. And Todd fine-tuning his game as a top golfer on the opposing side. Let the mind-games begin!
A cool but sunny day awaited the foursome off the tee box. The delayed start for frost backed up the course but things got off to a fast start - and set the tone for the round. Rick found the fairway bunker on way to a double bogey - a sign of troubles for Rick off the tee. Jon C. had two good shots to the green but struggled with putting, also taking a double on the first - again, a sign of short-game and putting woes throughout the round. Steve and Todd both parred and established the fight for first from the first hole. The front 9 was all Steve parring 5 of the first 7 holes but took double and triple to the turn - signs of his typical mid-round troubles. Todd had nothing worse than a bogey on the front - establishing his consistancy throughout the round.
A birdie on the front for Rick was only a meer consilation as he turned in a less than stellar performance after 18. Jon C. struggled to get a feel for the greens and had limited opportunities to test out the new clubs. Steve's 10 at 11 set him up for his typical surge at the end, where he had a chance on 18 to overtake the lead. This was possible because Todd struggled on his nemesis hole, the par 5 16th, bring Steve back into the mix. Both players found the drink in similar fashion on the short par 3 17th but Todd was able to hold off Steve on the final hole to take his 2nd RAGA tour victory - first of the 2016 season.
