A perfect storm of warm winter weather and a weekend brings about the first RVA Cup round of the season as Steve, Rick, Mike, and Jon C. take on Independence and warm-up for the Donkey Cup!
It was a seasonably warm but blustery day as our foursome hit the links at 11:30 under overcast skies.. The open hole as always played the toughest at Independences for the RAGA players and Saturday proved no different. It showed some rust for all the players but Mike settled in to his usual consistance play. Jon C. started out well until he ran into twin snowmen at 4 and 5 while Steve bounced back from a poor start, and Rick struggled out of the gates, only to redeem himself with a chip-in birdie at #3. Mike held his consistant play for the opening 9 taking a 4 shot lead into the back over Steve.
Rick found his game on the back 9, chipping away at Mike's lead to eventually over take him going into the last. Steve and Jon C. stuggled under impaired faculties and fell of the pace. Rick led by one as they teed off on 18, with both Mike and Rick finding the fairway but a long way from the hole. After a short second shot by Rick, Mike got all of his fairway metal and the ball came to rest just left of the green. Rick struggled to get in from 100yds out, taking a snowman while Mike took the win with a closing par.
Great day, and a great way to begin the 2016 RAGA season! Now with only 2 months left until the Donkey Cup, and the weather becoming more favorable, looks like the momentum is heading the right direction for a fun, golf-filled Spring season!
